Abstract: On analyzing the data of a study carried out in six key senior high schools in China's three provinces, Guangdong, Henan and Qinghai, involving 290 Senior Two students and 47 Senior Two English teachers, it was found that the correlation between the students?reported amount of complete English homework and their English achievement was significantly positive, which means that the more English homework a student completes, the better his/her English achievement will be.

1.引言

1.1 研究背景

英语家庭作业是英语课程的有机组成部分,是英语学科教学宝贵的课程资源,它是连接英语课内学习与课外学习、学校教育与家庭教育的桥梁,是培养学生英语综合运用能力的有效途径。毫无疑问,英语家庭作业与英语教学的成败密切相关。

近年来,随着教育改革的不断深入,素质教育已得到越来越多教师、学生、家长的认可。人们普遍认为中国学生负担太大,而造成负担过重的其中一个重要原因就是家庭作业过量。在英语教学过程中,倡导给学生减负、实施素质教育的今天,英语家庭作业一直是英语教师、学生、家长及英语教育专家们议论的焦点。英语家庭作业是否有效?它与学生英语学习成绩之间有什么样的关系?是否家庭作业做得越多学习成绩就提高得越快?这些问题一直是人们关心的问题。

家庭作业涉及学生、教师、家长,毫无疑问,它是一个重要的教育问题。然而,我国很少有人研究这个问题。国外对家庭作业进行了大量的研究,其中对作业量与学习成绩关系的研究最多。但此类研究中大多都用作业时间来代表作业量,很明显这是不恰当的。因为做同样的作业,由于能力的差异,不同学生所用时间是大不一样的。对于作业相同的学生群体,用作业完成量来代表作业量就准确得多。在本研究中,广东、河南、青海三省的六所重点高中高二学生的英语家庭作业量基本一致(每天约为47、49、51分钟),因此用作业完成量来代表作业量更好。

Cooper,Lindsay,Nye和Greathouse(1998) 对田纳西州的709名中、小学生进行了研究。他们发现作业完成量与学生学习成绩之间存在正相关。

Bonyun(1992)回顾了二十个1985年至1991年的家庭作业研究,其中大多数都是在加拿大的高中进行的研究。这些研究所得出的一致结论就是:作业完成量与学生学习成绩之间是正相关的。

1.2 研究问题

本论文主要对以下两个问题进行研究:

(1)高中生通常完成多少英语家庭作业?

(2)高中英语家庭作业完成量与学生英语学习成绩之间有怎样的关系?

2.研究方法

2.1 抽样

为了使样本更具有代表性,本研究从广东、河南、青海三个省的六所重点高中抽取了290个高二学生、47位高二英语教师作为调查对象。广东是个较发达的地区,教学设施较好、英语教师水平也相对较高。因为外资、合资企业较多,学生们与英语接触的机会也较多;河南位于我国的中部,英语教学水平也属于中等;而青海在我国的西部,在这三个省中,英语教学水平最低。这三个省分别代表我国的发达、中等及不发达地区。

另外,因为高一学生刚入学,很难考察高中英语家庭作业对他们的影响,而高三学生正在准备参加高考,本研究抽取高二学生教师作为样本。

学生受试者的基本情况见表2.1。

施测时实际发放学生问卷300份、教师问卷50

份,回收有效学生问卷290份、教师问卷47份,有效率为96.7%。

2.2 测试工具

研究工具是自行编制的问卷,问卷分教师问卷与学生问卷。教师问卷与学生问卷的分类基本一致。为了便于分析,大多题目设计也一样。只是学生问卷每个维度的问题数比教师问卷多(教师问卷每个维度3-4个问题,而学生问卷为4-5个)。本研究只用了问卷的部分内容。

本研究没有专门设计试卷对学生的英语学习成绩进行测试,而是把学生高一学年末英语考试成绩作为学生的英语学习成绩。这次考试都是由每个学校所在地区组织的统考,具有较好的信度与效度。

2.3 数据分析

数据分析使用SPSS(11.0)软件进行的,包括以下部分:

(1)通过频数分析(Frequency Analysis)、卡方检验(Chi-square)分析教师与学生对问卷的反馈情况;

(2)通过相关分析(Correlation Analysis)分 析家庭作业完成量与学生学习成绩之间的关系。

3.研究结果与讨论

3.1 英语家庭作业完成量

3.1.1 对英语家庭作业时间的描述

教师问卷与学生问卷的第三部分第1题,内容基本一样(教师问卷为:我班学生一般每天做英语家庭作业的时间为 分钟。学生问卷为:我一般每天做英语家庭作业的时间为 分钟。其提供选项均为:a. 0;b. 30;c. 60;d. 90;e. 120),其目的是为了调查学生每天的英语家庭作业时间。

从表3.1可以看出,59.1%的教师、52%的学生都认为每天的英语家庭作业时间是60分钟,38.8%的教师、39.3%的学生认为每天的英语家庭作业时间为30分钟。通过计算均数可以算出高二学生每天的英语家庭作业时间约为49分钟。

高二学生一般有九门课程,即语文、数学、英语、物理、化学、生物、历史、地理、政治,通常每天上六门课。如果每门课的家庭作业时间都按40分钟计算,那么高二学生每天的家庭作业时间就是240分钟,即四个小时。很明显他们的家庭作业量太大了。

另外,从上表可以看出,似然比卡方值为17.642,相伴概率为.024,小于通常给定值0.05,所以否定不相关假设,可以认为教师与学生对家庭作业时间的描述高度一致,是可信的。

3.1.2 学生对其英语家庭作业完成量的描述

学生问卷的第三部分第3题为:通常我的英语家庭作业的完成情况是 。其提供选项 为:a.不做 ;b.做四分之一;c.做一半;d.做四分之三;e.全做。其目的是调查高二学生英语家庭作业的完成情况。

从表3.2可以看出,尽管高中生的英语家庭作业太多,经常不做、做四分之一的英语家庭作业的学生仅有1%、4.8%,而做四分之三和全做的学生总数高达83.2%。以上数据表明,大多数学生对英语家庭作业的态度是积极的。

3.2 相关分析

英语家庭作业完成量与学生英语学习成绩的关系

图3.1表明,英语家庭作业完成量与学生英语学习成绩之间存在显着的正相关(r =.297,p<.001),即在英语家庭作业量大致相同的情况下,英语家庭作业完成得越多,英语学习成绩就越好。即使在对数据分析时,对性别、作业环境、从前的英语学习成绩等变量进行控制,它们之间仍存在显着的正相关(r =.129,p<.05)。学生的英语学习成绩一开始就随着其英语家庭作业完成量的增加而提高,当英语家庭作业完成量达到四分之一时,学生英语学习成绩从七十多分上升到将近九十分 ;当英语家庭作业完成量达到四分之三时,学生的英语学习成绩上升到九十多分 ;而当英语家庭作业完成量达到全做时,学生的英语学习成绩又上升到一百一十分。

这个发现与Cooper,Lindsay,Nye和Greathouse(1998),Bonyun(1992)等的发现是一致的。

4.结论

从以上数据分析可以看出,高中学生英语家庭作业量约为每天49分钟,英语家庭作业与学生英语学习成绩之间有密切的关系,即在学生英语家庭作 业量基本一致的情况下,高中英语家庭作业完成量与学生英语学习成绩之间存在显着的正相关。

尽管该研究发现英语家庭作业完成量与学生英语学习成绩之间有显着的正相关,但这并不是说英语家庭作业做得越多越好。就像Cooper(1994)所发现的那样,家庭作业有个最佳量,即当家庭作业达到这个量时,效果最好;一旦超过了这个量,其效果就会降低甚至对学生的学习起负作用。

姚利民(2003)也指出“虽然有研究表明,在一定时间范围内,学生做家庭作业有助于改善学习,做家庭作业越多,成绩越好,增加学生的家庭作业时间更可能改善学生的成绩。例如,匈牙利、日本、荷兰的学生较瑞典、芬兰、英格兰、挪威、中国香港的学生做更多的家庭作业,因而学习成绩更好,波兰、意大利、以色列的学生因为做家庭作业时间少,因而成绩相对较差。但是,超过一定量的家庭作业非但不与成绩改善正相关,相反,过多的家庭 作业还会导致以下结果:(1)导致学生疲劳,影响他们的身体发育和成长;(2)给学生增加了压力,使他们感到焦虑,并对学习产生消极态度,厌恶和害怕学习;(3)干扰了学生的社会交往和其他活动,不利于他们的全面发展。因此,布置的作业量要适当。”

Beaton, et al. (1996)、Weston(1999)、Osgood and Keys(1998)、Miller and Kelley (1991)、Gill(1996)等也发现家庭作业时间与学生学习成绩之间存在曲线相关,即当作业时间达到最佳时间时学生的学习成绩最好,而一旦超过这个时间学习成绩就开始下降。

因此,高中英语教师在英语教学过程中,首先,应该放弃那种英语家庭作业多多益善的观念,应布置高质量且数量合适的英语家庭作业;其次,在所布置的英语家庭作业量适当的情况下,因为英语家庭作业完成量明显地影响学生的英语学习成绩,对所布置的英语家庭作业要督促学生尽可能全部完成;最后,对学生的家庭作业要及时反馈。尽可能最大程度地发挥英语家庭作业的作用。
