一为题材特点。英语作文题材广泛，以贴近现实生活为主，话题较多，反映了时代精神。涉及多种体裁，包括书信（申请信、求职信、交友信等）、日记、通知、记叙文、说明文、议论文等。其中，书信、说明文和议论文是高考考查的重点。
二为形式特点。图文结合已成近年高考英语作文的命题趋势，这种考题易入题且更有发挥空间。近几年，看图作文在高考书面表达中占有相当大的比例。自2002年以来，全国大部分高考试卷都是看图作文。这类题型形象、直观、内容具体，且在图的前面一般还有文字说明，因此考生一般都有话可写且不会走题。近年来，北京市“开放作文”就倾向于“就图论事”，和2004年的“续写型开放作文”有很大差异。情景作文仍沿用了看图说话的形式，略有变化的是以书信形式表达，增加了实用性；画面清晰，主题分明，有特色，易理解，内容源于学生家庭和学校生活，能有效激发学生情感，使他们“有感而发”，题目也更灵活、宽松，思维的自由度更大。
无论英语书面表达试题多么“花哨”。其实得分点仅体现在三个方面：表达准确，句子结构美观，行文逻辑连贯。因此，教师在平时进行英语作文教学时就要有意引导，勤于训练，注重积累，可以有针对性地从以下三个方面进行强化训练。
第一，训练学生用高频单词准确表达思想。我的训练方案是：先给学生中文信息，要求学生用英文表达出来。如讲“北京很迷人”，若不知道“迷人”或“吸引人”用英文怎么说，可以绕开生词，换一种方式把这句话写出来，比如这么写“Beijing is so beautiful that many people come here.”你看，“so…that…”结构是初中学过的，这句话里的每个单词都很简单，而这个档次的句子，就足以使学生作文脱颖而出了！
第二，训练学生把短句拼成长句，并能够美化句子结构。我的训练方案是：在学生写的句子的基础上，启发学生通过简单变换“化腐朽为神奇”，如学生写出“Nowadays parents expect their children to become a famous man in the future. They make them work and study all kinds of thing all the day.”这句英文后，我立即启发学生美化该句的结构，将其改成：“Nowadays parents expect their children to become a famous man in the future, so they make them work and study all kinds of thing all the day.”
第三，训练学生运用常用的几个连接词实现“行文连贯”。建立学生的“行文连贯”意识，让学生明白英语句子前后是有逻辑关系的，这种逻辑关系需要连接词来表现，这样才能满足试题“行文连贯”的要求。如“After it ate up the apple, the monkey jumped on to the fan. Then it jumped on to Wang Lin’s desk and opened it，but there was nothing inside.”一句中的after，then等连接词，能给作文增色不少。教师可通过类似句式进行训练。
